Our Philosophy

We offer a personal approach to patients with neurosurgical problems; our neurosurgeons and nurse practitioners are committed to the highest quality patient care in a compassionate environment.

Our personalized approach begins in the office during the time of initial consultation. The office visit includes review of X-rays, MRI, and CT scans with review of history and physical examination. Dr. Elowitz and Dr. Härtl will design a customized treatment plan for each patient based on his or her own individual needs. We are strong advocates of patient education, and we respect the patient's role in the decision-making process. If surgery is indicated we fully discuss the procedure, alternatives, and potential risks.

In general, we take a conservative approach to spinal problems. In the absence of an acute, emergent situation we will usually recommend an adequate trial of non-operative treatment before seriously considering surgery.

For patients who do require surgery we practice state-of-the-art techniques at NYC Neurosurgery. The best long-term patient outcomes are our goal. Often this involves using advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques for spinal conditions. We frequently use computerized stereotactic image-guided surgery and state-of-the art spinal navigation systems.

We understand that planning spine surgery is very stressful for the patient and their family. Our nurse practitioners work to ensure that patients are fully educated about their diagnosis, surgery, and post-operative course. Patient questions and concerns are welcomed and encouraged. The NYC Neurosurgery team strongly believes that patients who are educated and realistic about their surgical treatment achieve the most optimal results.

Dr. Härtl and Dr. Elowitz are members of the faculty of the nationally recognized Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, with appointments at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Both of these neurosurgeons are routinely included in lists of America’s Top Doctors, New York’s Best Doctors, and New York Super Doctors. The US News and World Report: America's Best Hospitals survey for 2014-15 ranked us first in New York and second in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery. We are now ranked as the best neurology/neurosurgery practice in New York, the best in the northeast, and the best east of the Mississippi River.

As members of the Weill Cornell Spine Center, Dr. Härtl and Dr. Elowitz continue to help advance the field of minimally invasive spinal surgery. Our aim is always to assure state-of-the-art spine care with individual attention to each patient’s unique needs.
